Ladakh Acclimatization Guide

Leh's altitude of 3,500m means every visitor needs to take altitude seriously. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) can ruin - or end - a Ladakh trip if ignored.

Day 1: Arrive & Rest

On arrival in Leh, do NOT exert yourself. Walk slowly, avoid stairs, hydrate aggressively (3-4L water). First night is the most critical - sleep is the best medicine.

Day 2: Light Local Sightseeing

Gentle sightseeing around Leh town (palace, Shanti Stupa, market) helps your body adjust. Avoid Khardung La or Pangong on day 2 - many travellers make this mistake.

Day 3+: Higher Altitude

After 2 nights in Leh you can attempt Nubra (3,048m, via Khardung La 5,359m) or Pangong (4,350m).

Golden Rules

  • Diamox (acetazolamide) 125mg twice daily - consult your doctor
  • No alcohol for the first 48 hours
  • Hydrate with 3-4L water daily
  • Carry an oxygen canister (₹400 in Leh markets)
  • Descend immediately if symptoms worsen

Symptoms of AMS

  • Headache, nausea, dizziness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Shortness of breath

Severe symptoms (confusion, fluid in lungs) require immediate descent - do not wait.
