Sonmarg

Sonmarg - the 'Meadow of Gold' - earns its name from the sun-kissed golden glow its meadows take on at dawn and dusk, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Zoji La pass and the Kolahoi glacier. At 2,800m, it is the last major town on the Srinagar–Leh highway before the steep climb over Zoji La, the traditional gateway to Ladakh. Sonmarg is the launch point for the stunning Thajiwas Glacier trek, the twin alpine lakes of Krishansar and Vishansar, and the multi-day trek to Gangabal beneath Mount Harmukh. The Sind River runs turquoise through town, and in July the meadows erupt in wildflowers. It is also the access point for the Baltal route of the Amarnath Yatra.
