About Gangabal Lake

Gangabal Lake, at 3,575m in the foothills of Mount Harmukh (5,142m), is one of Kashmir's most sacred lakes - the destination of an annual Hindu pilgrimage on the eighth day of the Bhadon month (August-September). The trek to Gangabal from Sonmarg or Naranag passes through alpine meadows, the smaller Nundkol Lake, and finally the vast blue expanse of Gangabal, with Harmukh's ice-clad pyramid reflected perfectly on still mornings. Trout fishing is excellent here, and the surrounding meadows are dotted with shepherds' camps. The combination of spiritual significance, mountain grandeur, and relative solitude makes Gangabal one of the most rewarding destinations in Kashmir for serious trekkers.
