About Verinag
Verinag is the source of Kashmir's great river, the Jhelum (Vyeth), where an octagonal spring gushes from the base of the Pir Panjal range. The Mughal emperor Jahangir built an exquisite stone basin around the spring in 1620, and Shah Jahan added a garden pavilion - making Verinag one of the earliest Mughal constructions in Kashmir. The deep blue-green spring is so clear that the submerged stones appear to float. Surrounded by pine-covered slopes, it is a serene, contemplative spot, far from the crowds, and the starting point of the Jhelum's 725-km journey through Kashmir and Punjab.
